Overview of the Activities
The Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (National Security Committee) launched for the first time the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)'s National Security Education Day on 15 April 2021, kicking off a series of spectacular activities.

Ms. Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor gave a speech on stage With the theme "Uphold National Security, Safeguard Our Home – Improve Electoral System, Ensure Patriots Administering Hong Kong", the National Security Education Day 2021 aimed at raising Hong Kong citizens' awareness of national security; creating a positive atmosphere of safeguarding national security; enhancing the capability to fend off national security risks; deepening public understanding of the Constitution, the Basic Law and national security; and fostering a sense of national identity.

The Opening Ceremony cum Seminar of the National Security Education Day 2021 was held at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 15 April 2021. The guests of honour included Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBM, GBS, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR and the Chairperson of the National Security Committee; Mr Tung Chee Hwa, GBM, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Mr Luo Huining, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR and National Security Adviser to the National Security Committee; Mr Zheng Yanxiong, Head of the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr Yang Yirui, Acting Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR; and Major General Chen Daoxiang, Commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison.

開幕儀式 Over 600 guests attended the event. They included senior officials of the HKSAR Government, Executive Council Members, Legislative Council Members, representatives of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, representatives of the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, representatives of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR, representatives of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress and Hong Kong members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Their presence has made the event a success.

贈書儀式 The event included a book presentation ceremony, where Mr Luo Huining, the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, presented the "Book on the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China" on behalf of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China to teachers of primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. The books were received by Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR on behalf of the beneficiaries. The presentation aimed at providing better support to the HKSAR Government in the promotion of national security education among young people, enriching the teaching resources for schools and teachers in Hong Kong, and benefiting the young people in Hong Kong. In a pre-recorded video, Mr Chen Baosheng, Minister of Education, introduced the book and expressed the staunch support of the Central People's Government for national security education in the HKSAR.

陳寶生先生致詞 The Opening Ceremony cum Seminar was webcast live, facilitating the public to listen to the speeches by the guests of honour, as well as the informative and insightful talks by the guest speakers, which helped to raise public awareness of national security.

There were also a series of activities for the public, which were all well received.

First of all, there was the territory-wide activity "Together We Safeguard Our Nation and Homeland - Community Mosaic Wall". Many local organisations and thousands of people showed their support for and participated in the activity, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Participants took photos at the scene or chose photos from their mobile phones, and put the photo stickers onto a jigsaw board to create a thematic mosaic. They also helped each other to take photos to mark this meaningful day.

At the same time, a number of kindergartens and primary schools in Hong Kong held the activity "Together We Safeguard Our Nation and Homeland - School Mosaic Wall" to disseminate to students messages about safeguarding national security and building a safer and better home together.

The disciplined forces also opened their training institutes to the public on that day (morning and afternoon sessions), aiming to introduce to the public their missions and work in safeguarding the security of our country and Hong Kong. Activities included exhibitions, video shows, game booths, expert talks, professional demonstrations, simulation exercises, displays of equipment, and Chinese-style foot drill performances.

A public exhibition was staged at the City Gallery to celebrate the National Security Education Day 2021. Well received by the public, the exhibition provided in-depth yet easy-to-understand information on the important A Holistic Approach to National Security introduced by President Xi Jinping on 15 April 2014, as well as the overall goal, major elements and more than ten fields of security, with a view to deepening public understanding of national security. The exhibition at the City Gallery was open to members of the public from 15 April to 2 May 2021.

The activities attracted enthusiastic participation from the public, successfully creating a positive atmosphere of safeguarding national security. As at the morning of 16 April 2021, the number of visits to the website of the National Security Education Day reached 720 000, fully reflecting the public's enthusiasm in and support for upholding national security and safeguarding our home.
